Ms Miles (“Ms Miles,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the website www.msmiles.ca (the “Site”). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use and protect it, and the choices you have. It’s written for Canadian readers and reflects our obligations under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).
This policy is a plain-language summary of our privacy practices and is not a substitute for legal advice. If you have specific legal questions about how privacy law applies to your situation, please consult a qualified lawyer.
Who we are
Ms Miles is a Canadian travel and credit card rewards blog written for families. You can reach us any time through our Contact page. [Legal business name and mailing address to be added here.]
Information we collect
We collect information in a few different ways, depending on how you interact with the Site:
- Information you give us directly. When you use our contact form, comment on a post, or fill out a survey (for example, our family points and travel survey), we collect the information you submit — typically your name, email address, and the content of your message. These submissions are stored securely in our WordPress database and sent to us by email.
- Newsletter sign-up. If you subscribe to our email newsletter, we collect your email address (and, if you provide it, your first name) through our email service provider, Kit (formerly ConvertKit). We only send you newsletter emails if you’ve opted in, consistent with CASL’s consent requirements, and every email includes an unsubscribe link.
- Analytics information. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the Site — for example, which pages are popular and how people find us. Google Analytics collects information such as your approximate location (city/region level, not your exact address), device and browser type, pages visited, and how long you stay. This is done using cookies and similar technologies, described below.
- Cookies and similar technologies. Like most websites, we use cookies. See the “Cookies” section below for details.
- Information from embedded content. Some pages include embedded content, such as Instagram posts. These embeds may collect data about your visit in accordance with the third party’s own privacy policy, described further below.
We do not collect sensitive financial information such as credit card numbers, banking details, or Social Insurance Numbers through this Site. When you click through to apply for a credit card or other product, you’ll do so on the card issuer’s own website, subject to their privacy practices — not ours.
Cookies and tracking technologies
When you first visit the Site, you’ll see a cookie consent banner that lets you choose which categories of cookies to allow:
- Essential cookies — required for the Site to function properly (for example, remembering your cookie preferences). These cannot be turned off.
- Statistics (analytics) cookies — used by Google Analytics to help us understand how visitors use the Site, in aggregate and anonymized form where possible.
- Marketing cookies — used to measure the effectiveness of content and, where applicable, affiliate and advertising relationships.
You can change your cookie preferences at any time by clearing your browser’s cookies for this Site or by revisiting the cookie preference banner. Most browsers also let you block or delete cookies through their settings — keep in mind that blocking essential cookies may affect how the Site functions.
Affiliate links and advertising
Ms Miles earns commissions when readers apply for credit cards or other products through links on this Site. We use a link-management tool (Pretty Links) to organize and track these affiliate links, which appear as short links starting with /go/. When you click one of these links, the linked company may set its own cookies or receive information indicating that you came from our Site, so that we can be credited for the referral. We don’t control, and aren’t responsible for, the privacy practices of the sites you’re taken to. For more on how we choose what to recommend and how we’re compensated, see our Affiliate & Advertising Disclosure and our Ratings Methodology pages.
How we use your information
We use the information we collect to:
- Respond to your questions and messages;
- Send the newsletter content you’ve asked to receive;
- Understand how the Site is used so we can improve our content and user experience;
- Maintain the security and proper functioning of the Site; and
- Meet legal and regulatory obligations.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
Who we share information with
We share information with a small number of service providers who help us run the Site, including:
- Google Analytics (Google LLC) — website analytics;
- Kit / ConvertKit — email newsletter delivery;
- Meta/Instagram — for embedded Instagram content displayed on the Site;
- Our web hosting provider, which stores the Site’s files and database; and
- Card issuers and affiliate networks, when you click through to their sites via our affiliate links (see above).
These providers may process information on servers located outside Canada, including in the United States, and that information may therefore be subject to the laws of those jurisdictions. We otherwise share personal information only when required by law, to protect our rights, or with your consent.
Data retention
We keep contact form submissions and comments for as long as needed to respond to your inquiry or maintain the discussion on our Site, and newsletter contact information for as long as you remain subscribed. You can ask us to delete your information at any time (see “Your rights” below).
Your rights
Under PIPEDA, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information we hold about you and how it’s used;
- Access and request a copy of your personal information;
- Correct inaccurate information; and
- Withdraw consent (for example, unsubscribe from our newsletter at any time using the link in every email, or ask us to delete your contact form submissions).
To exercise any of these rights, contact us through our Contact page. We’ll respond within a reasonable time.
Children’s privacy
This Site is intended for adults and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We take reasonable technical and administrative measures to protect the personal information we hold from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access. However, no method of transmission or storage over the internet is 100% secure, and we can’t guarantee absolute security.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal reasons. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent revision. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
