It is officially the end of an era for the blue bird. On January 26, 2026, BMO Financial Group announced the biggest transformation in the 34-year history of the program: Air Miles is becoming Blue Rewards.
For Canadian travel moms who have spent years meticulously separating “Cash” and “Dream” miles, this is a massive shift. The rollout is happening in stages, with the full brand transition scheduled for Summer 2026.

Here is everything you need to know about the new currency, the new partners, and how to protect your hard-earned rewards during the transition.
1. The Death of the “Double Bucket” System
The most significant change is the immediate simplification of how you earn. Since January 25, 2026, the confusing split between Cash Miles and Dream Miles has been abolished.
- The Old Way: You had to set a “preference” percentage. If you wanted a flight, you put points in Dream. If you wanted grocery money, you put them in Cash. If you had 94 miles in each, you couldn’t buy a $10 voucher.
- The Blue Rewards Way: All miles are now in one single balance. You can use any point for any reward—whether it’s a toaster, a flight to Halifax, or a $10 eVoucher at the checkout.
2. The New Currency: “Blue Points”
When the program fully rebrands this summer, your “Miles” will officially become Blue Points. BMO has guaranteed a “no loss of value” transition, but the math is changing to align with modern loyalty standards.
The Conversion Math
While you won’t lose purchasing power, the numbers on your screen will look much larger.
- Current Benchmark: 95 Air Miles = $10 CAD.
- New Benchmark: 1,500 Blue Points = $10 CAD.
- The Multiplier: To maintain the same value, 1 Air Mile will convert into approximately 15.79 Blue Points.
MS Miles Tip: Don’t panic if you see a huge jump in your balance this summer; you aren’t suddenly “points rich,” the scale has just shifted to a system where 1 point is worth roughly 0.67 cents.
3. Major Partner Shakeups (The Shell Exit)
The biggest “bummer” for Canadian drivers is the departure of a long-time anchor. Shell Canada is leaving the program.
- Western Canada (Alberta): The partnership ends very soon—March 2, 2026.
- Rest of Canada: You can earn and redeem at Shell until May 25, 2026.
- Where is Shell going? They are moving to the Scene+ ecosystem (the same program used by Sobeys, Safeway, and Cineplex).
To fill the gap, Blue Rewards is pivoting toward high-frequency “lifestyle” partners. New additions for 2026 include:
- Porter Airlines: A massive win for East Coast and urban travellers.
- Accor Hotels: You can now earn/redeem at premium brands like Fairmont, SLS, and Novotel.
- MTY Group: Points can now be used at over 30 restaurant brands, including Thai Express, Baton Rouge, and Mucho Burrito.
- Instacart: Earn points on your grocery deliveries—perfect for busy moms.
4. The “Expedia” Travel Upgrade
One of the loudest complaints about the old Air Miles was the limited flight inventory. Blue Rewards has fixed this by partnering with Expedia Group.
- More Inventory: You will now have access to virtually any flight, hotel, or car rental available on Expedia.
- Partial Redemptions: Gone are the days of needing “enough” points for a whole flight. You can now use Blue Points to cover part of the cost and pay the rest in cash.
- No Minimum Thresholds: You can use as little as 1 point toward a travel booking.
5. BMO Banking Integration
Since BMO owns the program, they are turning Blue Rewards into a “banking loyalty” hybrid.
- Debit Card Earning: In a rare move for Canadian banks, BMO chequing account holders can now opt-in to earn Blue Points on debit purchases in categories like gas, groceries, and even EV charging.
- New Credit Cards: BMO is launching a new line of Blue Rewards Mastercards this summer. They are promising “Canada’s only cards” with built-in accelerators for Wholesale Clubs (think Costco/BJ’s spend) alongside gas and groceries.
6. Action Plan: What should you do now?
| Action Item | Deadline | Why? |
| Empty your Shell balance | May 25, 2026 | You won’t be able to redeem at the pump after this date. |
| Check your App | Now | The Air Miles app will automatically update to Blue Rewards this summer. |
| Join the Waitlist | Before Summer | BMO is running a “1 Million Blue Points” giveaway for those who join the new card waitlist. |
| Receipt Scanning | Ongoing | Use the app to scan receipts from any grocery store to earn bonus points. |
The Bottom Line
Blue Rewards is BMO’s attempt to compete with PC Optimum and Scene+. By moving away from “Miles” (which implies travel) and toward “Points” (which implies everyday cash value), they are making the program more useful for the average Canadian household.
For us travel moms, the Accor and Porter partnerships are the real “hidden gems” here. Being able to earn points on school lunches at Thai Express and spending them on a stay at the Fairmont Empress is a significant upgrade from the old system.
